Whiplash is the term commonly used to describe injuries resulting from personal injury accidents where the head is thrown rapidly back and forth in a "whipping" motion. Whiplash injuries are usually worse if the victim's head was turned to the side at the time of the impact. Whiplash is recognized as the most common type of injury received by victims in car accidents and causes damage to spinal joints, discs, ligaments, muscles, and nerves. The effects of whiplash can be serious and can leave the neck permanently susceptible to injury.
Research has shown that Whiplash leads to permanent disability in about ten percent of people injured in personal injury accidents. Over one million people have a whiplash injury in the U.S. every year and twenty five percent of these cases result in chronic pain and disability. One in seven whiplash victims will still suffer with significant pain more than three years after the accident.
Whiplash is usually diagnosed following an examination by a doctor. Diagnostic testing including X-rays, MRI or CT may be used. Whiplash frequently injures the joints of the neck.
Many patients transported to a hospital Emergency Room or Acute Care facility will be placed in a hard neck brace on a back board- as a preventive measure to avoid more serious injury to the neck. Whiplash treatment will vary depending on the extent of your injury and the area of your spine that is injured. Common treatment involves Chiropractic treatment involving joint mobilization and manipulation along with Physical therapy consisting of heat, cold, traction, cervical collar, trigger point therapy, ultrasound, massage, and neck exercises.
