INJURIES IN LOW SPEED ACCIDENTS
Many drivers have had a minor collision if they have been driving for any length of time. There is a confusing issue surrounding the speed of the vehicle in an accident and the injuries that result. Drivers involved in high speed accidents, in which significant damage to their vehicle results, may not be seriously injured, however, drivers involved in lower speed accidents are seriously injured.
The reality is that injury risk is dependent on many variables and not shared equally by all vehicle passengers equally. Accident variables include the speed of the car, and the forces resulting from the collision. With this information, it is possible to roughly estimate the effects on the vehicle occupants. It is well known that a number of other factors can increase or reduce the risk for injury. For example, females are at twice the risk as males for whiplash. Being unaware of the impending crash places you at greater risk of injury than those who are able to brace themselves for the impact. Occupants with their heads turned at the time of impact have an increased the risk of injury, as well as occupants that have had a previous neck injury.
There have been a number of research studies involving crash tests in which human subjects have been evaluated in low speed crashes. Some researchers have reported that injuries can occur in collisions in which the speed of the car is 5 mph or greater. Other researchers reported that more than thirty percent of their test subjects experienced injuries at speeds as low as 2.5 mph.
